Guides/where did the comments go

TROUBLESHOOTING / 7 MIN READ

Where did the comments go — and which ones are gone for good.

The comments were on screen before and are missing now. That is a different problem from a panel that never appeared, and it has five explanations — one of which is not a deletion at all.

Most guides read this question as “why can’t I see the comments” — and answer with cache clearing, which fixes one cause out of five and none of the ones on this page. Start instead from the thing that actually changed: a comment that used to be there is not there now.

Which kind of “gone” do you have?

Four different problems get described the same way. Find your row first — the fix for each one lives in a different place, and only one of the four is a disappearance.

  • The comment section was never there — nothing has been removed. The video is not showing comments at all — that is a visibility problem, not a disappearance.
  • The panel appears but never finishes loading — the comments exist and are public; the request is being dropped somewhere between you and the page.
  • The number next to Comments does not match what you can see — the count is not a live inventory. It includes replies and refreshes on its own schedule, so a mismatch proves nothing either way.
  • It was there before, and now it is not — this page. Something changed after the comment was posted — it was removed, or a hiding rule switched on.

The first two rows have their own pages: a panel that was missing from day one is a visibility problem, covered by why comments are not showing, and one that spins forever is a rendering problem, covered by why comments are not loading. This page is about the fourth row: the comments existed, and something happened to them afterwards.

If the video is yours

Open YouTube Studio, then Community, then the video. Comments that are held for review or flagged as likely spam are waiting there with approve and remove actions — held comments are the one category on this page that is not lost yet.

The five ways comments disappear

All five happen after a comment is published — which is why “it was fine yesterday” is not evidence that nothing changed. Read the fix line before acting: two of the five cannot be fixed by anyone.

  1. The creator removed it, or closed the sectionCreators can delete any comment on their own video — from the watch page or from Studio — and they can turn the whole comment section off, on one video or as a channel default. A section that disappeared between two visits usually means a setting changed in between: video details stay editable for the life of the video, and a reclassification (a video later marked Made for Kids, for example) closes comments by policy. Deleted comments do not go to a queue, and nobody — including the creator — can restore one. What to do: Nothing on the viewer side can bring it back. If the video is yours, the current state is in YouTube Studio: Content, select the video, then Show more and Comments and ratings.
  2. YouTube removed it after it was postedComments that break the rules are removed by automated systems and by human moderators — links, repeated text, harassment, spam bursts. Unlike the hold queue, this happens after posting: a comment can survive for days or weeks and then vanish, and removals often arrive in batches, which is why one thread can lose several comments on the same day. A removed comment does not sit in any queue that can be approved, and it disappears for everyone at once. What to do: Look for the pattern first: if the missing comments share a link, a repeated phrase or heavy emoji, that is the usual trigger. A removed comment cannot be restored — the practical fix is what to post differently next time.
  3. The person who wrote it deleted itAnyone can delete their own comment at any time, and edits replace the text in place — so a comment you remember may still exist with different words. An account deletion takes that account's comments with it. This is the most common reason a single comment disappears from an old thread, and it is silent: no notification, no queue, the number next to the section simply goes down. What to do: There is nothing to recover, even for the person who wrote it. If the comment was yours and you need the text, it has to come from an export you made earlier — see the bottom of this page.
  4. The video or the channel is goneIf a video is deleted, made private or removed for a policy violation, its comments go with it — and a channel termination takes every thread on that channel at once. Re-uploads do not inherit anything: the new upload is a different video with a different ID, so its comment section starts at zero even when the old thread had years of discussion. What to do: Check the URL before anything else. If the watch page says the video is unavailable, or the channel no longer exists, the comments were not hidden — they stopped existing, and no tool can read them.
  5. It is hidden, not deletedFour rules keep a comment out of public view without deleting it: a comment held for review (the default for anything YouTube flags as potentially inappropriate), a blocked word on the channel's list, hiding a user from a channel, and the ranked Top comments view. In all four cases the comment still exists — and in some of them you can still see it yourself while nobody else can. What to do: Run the signed-out test below. If the comment shows up in one window and not the other, it is hidden rather than deleted — and hiding rules can be lifted, while deletions cannot.

Hidden or deleted — the two-minute test

Four of the five causes above are silent: nothing tells you which one you have. The test is to compare two views of the same thread. It needs no tool and no account — just a private window, which is a clean viewer with nothing signed in.

  • Open the video in a private window while signed out — find the comment, or the phrase you remember, in the thread there. A private window is a different viewer: no account, no extensions, nothing personal — the closest thing to what everyone else sees.
  • Present for you, missing in the private window — a hiding rule. The comment exists but is being kept out of the public list — a hold, a blocked word, or a channel-level hide. Only the person who set the rule can undo it.
  • Present in the private window, missing in your own session — the difference is local to you — a filter, an extension or a signed-in state on your side, not a deletion.
  • Missing in both windows — treat it as removed or deleted. No queue can approve it, no tool can read it back, and the count will catch up on its own schedule.
The one outcome that is genuinely final

A comment that is missing in both windows is not hidden — it no longer exists. No viewer, extension or tool can read it back, because every one of them reads the same YouTube data. That is why anything you still need has to be saved while it is still on screen.

Save what is left

What is still in the thread today can be saved today. Threads change underneath you — comments get deleted, videos get reclassified, channels close — and a copy you exported is the only version that outlives all three.

Never saw them in the first place?

Then nothing was removed — the video or the account is not showing comments at all.
