TROUBLESHOOTING / 7 MIN READ
Why comments are not loading — and how to find the block in 60 seconds.
The comments exist and YouTube is serving them to everyone else. Something between you and that page is dropping the request. Three tests tell you which of five causes you actually have.
Almost every guide on this question starts with “disable your extensions” or “try another browser” — advice that is right roughly half the time and unhelpful the rest. Split it instead. Three tests separate the five causes apart, and each one tells you which section to go to.
The 60-second split
Run these in order and stop at the first one that changes something. Doing them out of order is how people end up clearing caches for twenty minutes and never learning whether the video was even the problem.
- Open the same video in a private window on the same browser. Comments come back? An extension was blocking them. Skip to cause 1.
- Open it on your phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi. Loads there? The problem is on the computer or its network. Skip to cause 4.
- Open any other video on the same device. That one works? This is specific to that video, which means it is a settings problem, not a loading problem.
One video fails while another works on the same device, which means nothing is being blocked. Go to why comments are not showing instead — that side of the problem lives in the video’s own settings, not in your browser.
The five causes, and how to confirm each one
Each cause below is listed with the test that confirms it, not just the symptom. A cause you have not confirmed is a guess, and guessing is what makes this take hours.
- An ad blocker or privacy extension is filtering the requestAd blockers and privacy extensions keep block lists for YouTube and the domains it loads from. When the comment request matches one, the panel stays empty or spins forever while the video itself keeps playing. Extension-based blockers also cover trackers that sit in the comments path, so blocking one domain at a time may not be enough.Confirm and fix: Pause the blocker for youtube.com on this tab and reload. If the comments appear, keep it paused or allow the list entry — YouTube has not published the exact mechanism, so the reload test is what actually proves the filter was the cause.
- Third-party cookies are blockedThe video plays from one set of cookies and the comment panel reads from another, which is why blocking cookies can leave you watching a perfectly fine video with no comments at all. Browsers now block third-party cookies by default in several configurations, and privacy windows block more aggressively than normal ones.Confirm and fix: Open the video in a normal window rather than a private one, or allow third-party cookies for youtube.com. If it loads, your cookie policy is the cause and no cache clear will change it.
- A stale cached pageSometimes the page on file is an old build that keeps requesting a comment endpoint which no longer answers. Refreshing reloads the same stale copy, which is why the panel can sit there indefinitely while everything else on the site works.Confirm and fix: Hard reload with Cmd+Shift+R on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows. If that does not do it, clear site data for youtube.com only — you do not need to clear all browsing history.
- The network is filtering itSchool, workplace and public networks filter traffic by category, and YouTube comments frequently land in a different category from video playback. This is why the video starts instantly and the comments never arrive — the two requests are treated differently by the same filter.Confirm and fix: Switch to mobile data or a different network and reload. If comments appear, you have a network filter, and the fix belongs to whoever runs the network.
- It only fails in one app or browserThe YouTube app and a desktop browser render comments with separate code paths and separate permission sets, so a video can work in one and fail in the other without anything being wrong with the video itself. A corrupted app update, a webview cache, or an extension injected into only one browser all look the same from the outside.Confirm and fix: Test the same video in two of these: app and browser, phone and computer, normal window and private window. Whichever pair differs tells you which layer is responsible.
How to tell a loading failure from a missing panel
The distinction matters because only one of the two is fixable on your machine. Watch what the panel does before you change anything.
- Spinner, or a panel that stays blank — the request went out and did not come back. That is a loading failure: cause 1 to 5 above.
- No comment section at all, no spinner — nothing was requested because the video or the account says there is nothing to show. That is a settings problem, and the fix is on YouTube’s side.
- Comments appear, one is missing — sorting, moderation or spam filtering. Also a settings-side problem.
- Everything fails, including on mobile data — check a status tracker before anything else. Widespread comment outages do happen, and they are rare.
For the second and third rows the causes and fixes are on the not-showing page — kept separate deliberately so neither page has to hedge about the other’s half.
Read them anyway
These three do not depend on your browser rendering a YouTube panel, which is exactly why they are worth having when the watch page will not cooperate.
- Read the thread — Comments load into a clean list outside the watch page, so one blocking layer cannot take them down.
- Search inside them — Pull up a specific phrase without waiting for a panel that may never finish loading.
- Export them — Save the visible comments as CSV or JSON so a flaky panel stops costing you the thread.
Panel is missing entirely, not stuck?
Then it is a settings or policy problem, not a blocking one — start from the symptom list.
